The gateway to the desert

The Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara rises like a mirage from the seemingly endless sea of sand. But what seems like an old clay fortress is one of the best hotels in the country – built according to the wishes of the sheikh and equipped with all modern Amenities. As a gateway to the Rub al-Khali desert, numerous excursions start here: from adrenaline-fueled jeep tours, leisurely camel trekkings to impressive stargazing.

The gateway to the mountains

If you pass the city limits of Abu Dhabi, the hustle and bustle are literally behind you. Especially in the oasis city of Al Ain, a different pace reigns. Cobblestone paths lead past millennia-old palm trees and everywhere you can hear the Splashing of the streams. Al Ain is considered the cradle of Emirati culture and is still steeped in tradition today.

Not far away, the rust-red flanks of the Hajar Mountains pile up. In 60 curves it goes on Abu Dhabi's highest peak, the Jebel Hafeet. From here, a breathtaking view of the desert and Al Ain is revealed.

The gateway to the island world

More than 200 islands are located off Abu Dhabi and no two are alike.

Sir Bani Yas – the island with untouched wildlife

After only 30 minutes of boat ride, visitors to Sir Bani Yas arrive in another, unexpected world. The nature reserve, which is about the size of Sylt, is home to 10,000 antelopes, including endangered species. On guided game drives you can see the herds galloping – often on the run from leopards, which also live on the island. In the mangrove forests you can see rare bird species by kayak and the secluded beaches invite you to take a dip in the sea.

Nurai – the elegant private island

Crystal clear waters, fine sandy beaches and an exclusive resort – that's all it takes to reach the hotspot. But even those who do not reside at the Zaya Nurai Island Resort are welcome on the small private island. A day ticket is available for about 150 euros. Then you can relax in one of the hammocks, bathe in the warm waters of the Gulf and feast on fresh seafood.

The gateway to the most beautiful beach

Hawksbill turtles have always come to Saadiyat Beach as if they knew that it is considered the most beautiful beach in the Emirates. It is nine kilometres long, lined with gently curved dunes and snow-white – man has not yet had his fingers in the game here. Everything arranged submit to the protection of turtles. When you come to lay eggs, large construction sites are paralyzed, lights are dimmed, the music is turned off outdoors and turtle protectors secure the nests and guard the young on their way into the sea.

The gateway to adrenaline

In Formula 1, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is often the race that decides everything. And if the Formula 1 cars are not thundering over the asphalt, then private individuals can rent racing cars and race across the 5.5-kilometre circuit with racing hearts. Only on Sundays, On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 6 p.m., cyclists and joggers can do their laps at their own pace.

Just five minutes away is the Ferrari World theme park with its extreme roller coasters that also make the blood throbble in the veins.

The gateway to great art

Abu Dhabi's Louvre has been exhibiting art from four millennia since November 2017, including paintings by da Vinci, Rodin to Picasso and the sculpture "Fountain of Light" by Ai Weiwei. Unlike in Paris, no pyramid conjures up plays of light here, but a gigantic glass dome, always new patterns on the floor.

But the Louvre is not to remain Abu Dhabi's only museum of world fame – star architect Frank O. Gehry is building the Guggenheim in the neighborhood and Sir Norman Foster is building the new Zayed National Museum.

The gateway to culture

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the largest and perhaps most beautiful mosque in the United Arab Emirates. Like many things in Abu Dhabi, it can also boast superlatives: the largest dome in the world, the largest contiguous Persian carpet (7000 square meters) and with a height of 15 meters, the largest chandelier in the world. With clear skies and sunshine, the Zayid Mosque shines in bright white and you have to put on sunglasses to avoid being dazzled. It is also worth seeing in the evening because of the illuminated facade.
